For fashion and Disney lovers alike, Balmain’s newest collection is guaranteed to generate excitement.
To honor the 30th anniversary of The Lion King and the upcoming theatrical release of Mufasa: The Lion King in December, Disney partnered with Balmain to launch a Lion King-themed, limited edition fashion collection. The unisex attire and accessories are designed with a focus on African craft and artistry, with items including dresses, suits, tote bags and more available for purchase on July 8.
"Working on this collaboration was a dream come true,” Balmain Creative Director Olivier Rousteing is quoted in a press release. “I was only nine years old when The Lion King was first released, but still today, almost three decades later, I only need to close my eyes to replay that incredible mix of music, images and emotions. The lessons that I absorbed, as I sat, absolutely transfixed by what was happening on the giant screen in front of me, have remained with me for my entire life.”
The collaboration highlights the contributions of rising talents Nika Mtwana, Enfant Precoce and Cassius Khumalo, three African painters who created prints and designs inspired by the film for the collection.
A visual showcase of a short film featuring the collection, directed by Femi Oladigbolu, will be produced and released by the Walt Disney Company in partnership with Balmain. Featuring 30 African models modeling the designs against stunning landscape shots of the South African Western Cape province, the film is a celebration of community. It will be shown on July 5th at the “Lion King In Concert” at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
The ready-to-wear pieces incorporate Balmain’s iconic quality craftsmanship with facets of the traditional animated Disney success and the new upcoming film, ensuring unique couture looks, and they're only available for a limited time.
