Fun fact: The etymology of “perfumer” derives from the Latin per fumum, meaning “through smoke.”
So, as Cartier’s in-house perfumer Mathilde Laurent poetically explains, the very origin of perfume is, in fact, smoke—making the launch of the maison’s debut novelty candles a très naturel evolution. “Through smoke, the origin of perfume, I wanted to offer the possibility to create amazing landscapes, real or imaginary, at home,” she says. “By lighting the Écrins Parfumés, we can rediscover the joy of moments spent in nature and invite everyone to enter into this unexplored sensory world of fragrance,” says Laurent. The three scents offer an olfactory contemplation capturing imaginary horizons—Désert (dunes warmed by a burning sun), Pétales (a meadow with thousands of blooming flowers drowned by the sun) and Canopée (a soaring and majestic journey above the trees with green, woody, fresh accords and energetic field). The scented boxes are meant to be burned alone or layered to maximize intensity. A fantastic voyage, indeed.
