Looking to buy or sell pre-loved fine jewelry, luxury watches and footwear? eBay's luxury consignment program is expanding, and it wants to work with you.
The online peer-to-peer marketplace launched its luxury consignment program in March of this year to great success. The program provides folks who’d like to sell their designer handbags and apparel with luxury goods experts who then provide the seller with high-end photography and intelligent pricing. The program incorporates eBay’s Certified by Brand and Authenticity Guarantee initiatives, which gives buyers peace of mind that they’re getting exactly what they expect.
The new expansion plan, which kicked off this month, broadens the program to include footwear, designer watches, fine jewelry and other accessories. Eligible brands for consignment include Gucci, Golden Goose, Chanel and more.
This consignment effort has proven lucrative for all parties involved. eBay reported that refurbished items comprise 40% of the company’s gross merchandise volume. While eBay maintains a percentage of each sale for the service provided, the company’s earnings depend on the retail selling price, and the higher the sale price, the lower eBay’s share.
The program is likewise lucrative for sellers. According to a press release, one such participant sold a small quilted Chanel 19 flap bag in December for 45% more than the average price of similar bags.
This expansion initiative is part of eBay's ongoing effort to increase sustainability and champion the circular economy. It makes the resale of luxury items accessible to casual sellers, while offering buyers a chance to rehouse high-quality apparel and accessories with certified authenticity guarantees.
