Rising star designer Kate Marker puts her indelibly stylish stamp on a new construction home for a young suburban family.
The family room beckons with custom sofas by Lee Industries, a Lawson coffee table by Arteriors and Elliston rug by Loloi.
THE CLIENT
It was a match made in Elmhurst: As the architect on a new-build home, Patrick Fortelka of Moment Design connected the owners to his longtime collaborators at Kate Marker Interiors, instinctively knowing that the pairing would make for a fruitful collaboration—and result in a happy, design-forward home tailored to fit the young family’s lifestyle.
Soaring windows fill the home with light.
The primary bath is an oasis of calm with a Victoria Albert Vetralla 2 Englishcast tub softened by a vintage rug.
THE PRIORITY
Says KMI principal designer and owner Kate Marker, “They were seeking a sleek and clean design, incorporating the wife’s favorite shade of green in as many ways as possible while also achieving a family-friendly space for their young family.”
A smart mix of organic textures makes the family room sing.
Visual Comfort’s Bistro tiered chandelier makes the dining room pop.
THE CHALLENGE
“Since we had not partnered with the builder and his trades previously, navigating new relationships had a learning curve,” notes Marker. The design team also worked to gain the client’s trust on elements such as vintage rugs. “It’s an element we love incorporating in so many of our projects, but the clients needed convincing that they [would work as an art statement]. They were an installation-day add-in, and of course the client ended up embracing and loving them after seeing how they added to a space.”
Palecek’s Melrose counter barstools make for prime seating at the kitchen island, which is decked out with waterfall countertops from Calia Stone Boutique.
Visual Comfort’s Strada large round chandelier stars in the study.
Benjamin Moore’s Dark Olive paint adds dimension to the cabinets in the scullery.
The powder room features Maddox terra cotta tile in Coal Moss from the Kate Marker Interiors x The Fine Line tile collection complemented by Clayton sconces by Visual Comfort.
THE DETAIL
“Instead of doing white oak floors through most of the main floor, we actually incorporated bluestone flooring,” notes Marker. “This dark and timeless element grounds the space and has a sleek yet tumbled appeal. We were also excited to incorporate Kate Marker Home tile from our own print collection in the powder room.”
The study beckons with vintage rugs plus cabinets by European Woodworkers painted in Benjamin Moore’s Cumulus Cloud.
THE OUTCOME
With a European, modern feel and stunning details like floor-to-ceiling windows, a large kitchen and scullery, open-concept kitchen/dining/living room, mudroom with cubbies for each family member and even an outdoor courtyard, it’s no surprise that this collaboration turned out to be a definite match. “They were thrilled and especially appreciative of how the space was transformed, from large decisions right down to the accessories,” sums up Marker. “They have already been a repeat styling customer to swap out for seasonal details, so it’s very rewarding to have an ongoing relationship to look forward to.”
Regina Andrew’s Dover ceramic table lamp is a chic accent in the primary bedroom.
