On-the-rise R&B singer-songwriter Liv Warfield takes the stage in Cabaret Zazou's new cirque show.
A protégée of the late Prince, Liv Warfield’s career has taken her around the globe and to immense heights—she even sang in Prince’s band, New Power Generation. Now, the artist joins Cabaret ZaZou, which brought us the theatrical production Teatro ZinZanni, in a forthcoming variety dinner show titled Luminaire. Here, we check in with the Peoriaborn talent to learn more about this next chapter in her career.
What are you most looking forward to about joining the cast in Cabaret ZaZou’s new show Luminaire?
The creative process lights me up a lot, as well as the audience’s energy, which I look forward to feeling. Right now we need good energy and good vibes, and I’m excited to create a space like that. … I have so much respect for my cast. To me, it translates to being in a band or team. We are a unit, and one pushes the other to be great.
You’ve performed around the globe and toured with massive talents including Lionel Richie, Cyndi Lauper and Prince, who was a mentor to you. How have those experiences shaped you and prepared you for this stage in your career?
Prince most definitely is my professor. To this day, lessons pop up in my life. I’m grateful for him in so many ways, and I’ve learned a lot as a performer and singer-songwriter from him. He always wanted me to grow and push the boundaries creatively, and the world of cirque has helped me tap into that energy even more.
What can Chicagoans expect from Luminaire?
Any spoilers? You know I can’t give away spoilers. For a show like this, you need to come ready to step into dreamland. I promise it’s not like anything you’ve seen before.
