Coinciding with the 10th anniversary edition of global art fair EXPO CHICAGO (April 13-16), The Peninsula Chicago unveils Neo Chicago, a contemporary art exhibition throughout the Mag Mile hotel's public spaces. The exhibit, opening at the same time as EXPO, features highlights from prolific art collector Beth Rudin DeWoody's collection and is curated by Laura Dvorkin and Maynard Monrow. Neo Chicago is the latest iteration of Art in Resonance, The Peninsula Hotels’ global contemporary art program. Here, the curators share a peek at some of the most important pieces to look out for. Through May, 108 E. Superior St.
“All the Unforgotten Bliss (the Early Bird) is one of the stars of Neo Chicago, and it's a privilege to show it in a new context and to a fresh audience. Sherald's vision of portraiture has secured her place, not just in the international art world, but in contemporary art history.” –curator Laura Dvorkin
“This multidisciplinary artist explores the intersection of sexuality and gender in a multitude of materials. Through fragmentation of the human form, the artist questions preconceived constructs of identity.” –curator Maynard Monrow
“Patterson's garden-like tapestries set the stage for the beautiful, mysterious figures that are hidden within. Works like Goffa challenge 'standard' masculinity and embody the dancehall tradition from the artist's birthplace of Jamaica. The textures, range of materials, and her application of them truly set her apart.” –Dvorkin
“Most of the artists in the exhibition are artists that DeWoody has supported for many years, and from the beginning of their careers. Pendleton is no exception. Two People is visual representation of the artist's earliest performative work, which centers around his very first New York show at Wallspace in 2004. We are so pleased to show this work almost 20 years later!” –Dvorkin
“Wright is an artist who’s due arrived later in his career. His lifelong chronicling of the outsider and marginalized haunts of daddies, dandies and drag queens has created quite the demand in an artworld finally catching up to his progressive queer vision.” –Monrow
“This dynamic artist reinvigorates discarded scrap metal shards combined with the classicism of paint into poignant evocative sculptures.” –Monrow
